Reno, NV Root Canal Dentist

We don’t know of anyone who likes to think about having a root canal. After decades of awful stories and bad jokes, it’s no wonder people have a negative reaction to the news that they need a root canal.

The team at the office of Dan Barrett DMD, wants you to know that, despite what you've heard, root canals don't have to be stressful or uncomfortable. The truth is that, with state-of-the-art technology and the support of a compassionate team of professionals, root canals at our Reno, NV dental office are usually no more complicated than having a cavity filled.

Why You Need a Root Canal

Our job is to keep your teeth healthy and intact. A root canal is a procedure that allows us to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.

When decay and disease penetrate the innermost portion of your tooth, we need to perform a root canal. During the procedure, Dr. Barrett uses state-of-the-art rotary endodontic technology to skillfully remove any infected tissue from inside the root or roots of the tooth. Then the canals inside the roots of the tooth are cleaned, disinfected, and sealed. In most cases, a dental crown will be recommended to protect and strengthen the tooth.

One of the questions we hear most often is, “Do root canals hurt?” The simple answer is no! Before your procedure begins, Dr. Barrett will make sure the affected area is completely numb. We are also pleased to offer nitrous oxide sedation if you feel like you will need a little extra help to relax. Our team is sensitive to your concerns and will go out of their way to put you at ease during treatment.

Symptoms of a Root Canal Infection

The signs and symptoms that indicate the need for a root canal vary from person to person. If you’re in intense pain and can’t identify any other reason, a root canal may be needed. Another symptom associated with root canal infection is an uncomfortable bump on the gum near the affected tooth.

Dr. Barrett will use digital x-rays to diagnose the problem, then provide you with a treatment recommendation. It’s important to remember that a tooth that needs a root canal may not hurt, and a tooth that hurts may not need a root canal. This is why we emphasize the importance of regular dental exams – they help us stay on top of any problems that are developing without your knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions

A root canal is needed when infection enters the innermost part of your tooth, leading to destruction of the nerve and tissues. Without treatment, you will experience worsening pain, and eventually the tooth will be lost.

Dr. Barrett understands that root canal treatment isn’t really a pleasurable idea. But it is a procedure that is necessary to prevent tooth loss and relieve pain.

Deep within the root of your tooth is the root canal, which contains dental pulp, tissue, and nerves. If severe decay or periodontal infection reaches this area, you are at great risk for losing the tooth. At this point, the only option we have for preventing tooth loss is root canal therapy.

If you’ve ever experienced the pain of an infected root canal, you know that it can be excruciating and virtually impossible to endure. Getting prompt treatment will eliminate this pain and preserve your tooth.

The purpose of a root canal is to clear away any infection by removing the affected pulp and tissue. Despite all the hype, a root canal is actually pretty straightforward – Dr. Barrett will remove the infection, fill the space with dental material, and seal the tooth. If the tooth has been severely weakened by decay, he may recommend a dental crown to protect and strengthen the tooth.

If you suspect you may need a root canal, please don’t hesitate to call our office. If you are in pain, we will get you in as quickly as possible, usually the same day.
