Comfortable Tooth Extractions in Reno, NV
Having a tooth extracted is unpleasant to think about. It can be hard to lose a tooth you thought you hoped would last a lifetime. Then you also have to face the prospect of the procedure itself as well as figuring out how you would like to replace the tooth.
We understand that the thought of extraction can be stressful. But you can be confident knowing that Dan Barrett DMD, and our experienced team will help support you through the process with skill and genuine concern for your needs.
Reasons for Tooth Extraction
If a tooth is badly damaged, our goal is to do everything possible to save it with treatments like fillings and crowns. Extracting a tooth is almost always the last resort for a damaged tooth. But sometimes a tooth is so damaged that it is beyond repair and requires removal.
There are several cases where we would recommend extraction:
- A decayed or broken tooth is so damaged it cannot be fixed with treatment like a root canal.
- In the case of advanced gum disease, where extraction is needed to save the gums and the rest of the teeth.
- We are preparing for orthodontic treatment and need to remove some teeth for the best results.
- A wisdom tooth has erupted in such a way that it compromises surrounding teeth.
If possible, we will discuss all your choices for tooth replacement prior to extraction. There are several options to choose from, including fixed bridges, dental implants, partial dentures, and even implant-supported dentures. Dr. Barrett will explain the benefits of each and help you decide which is most appropriate in your case.
Skilled Care with a Gentle Touch
Having a tooth extracted is challenging, but our team is here to make the procedure as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
We start with a local anesthetic to completely numb the area we will be treating. We also offer the additional comfort of nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Nitrous is a safe, gentle sedative that is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small nasal mask. All you have to do is sit back, breathe normally, and drift into a more relaxed state.
You will be alert enough to respond to questions from our team, but you will feel detached from the other activity going on around you. When the procedure is over and we stop administering the gas, you will feel no lingering after-effects. Nitrous has been used safely for decades; in fact, it is so mild that it’s safe enough to use for children!
