What causes tooth wear?
Tooth wear is progressive over the life of the patient and can be caused by multiple factors. Attrition is the wear of teeth caused by abnormal grinding during the day or at night time. If you are aware that you are a night time grinder a night guard is recommended to prevent further damage to the teeth. Erosion is caused by wear from acidic foods or from gastric reflux disease. If you are diagnosed with erosive tooth wear it is recommended to see your physician to rule out gastric reflux disease. It is also recommended to evaluate your diet and reduce foods with a high acid content. Tooth abrasion is caused by aggressive brushing with a hard bristle toothbrush. We always recommend our patients use a soft toothbrush or an electric toothbrush to minimize wear by abrasion. Concerned with tooth wear? Give our office a call today to schedule an evaluation!
